Return to Sport Testing in Ivanhoe, Victoria
Return To Sport Testing Reduces ACL Graft Ruptures By 4 Times
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) is one of the most common surgeries performed due to a ruptured ACL. The rehabilitation for an ACLR is extensive and takes at best a minimum of 9-12 months, however, in the community it is more likely to be 1-2 years to achieve a safe return to sport.
The research tells us that:
80% of ACL reconstruction patients return to some form of sport.
Only 65% return to their pre-injury sporting level and 55% return to sport at a competitive level occurs within 1-2 years post ACLR
This leaves 35% of non-professional players not returning to their level of sport and unfortunately 55% of patients under the age of 20 will sustain a 2nd ACL injury within 5 years after their first ACL reconstruction.
These statistics demonstrate the importance of comprehensive rehabilitation and a criteria based decision making in returning the individual back to sport. Recent research reports that the decision to return an athlete back to sport should be based on the individual meeting key performance and strength criteria rather than based on time-frames alone.
